Understanding Tokyo's two peak seasons
Tokyo is one of the world's great travel destinations and commands some of the most volatile airfares on long-haul routes. Unlike London or Paris, Tokyo's peak periods are driven primarily by Japanese cultural events — not just Western holidays — which makes the fare landscape confusing for first-time visitors.
The two airport question: Narita or Haneda?
Tokyo is served by two major international airports. Narita (NRT) handles the bulk of long-haul international traffic and is approximately 60–70 km east of central Tokyo (55–80 minutes by express train). Haneda (HND) is much closer — around 14 km from central Tokyo — and has expanded international routes significantly in recent years. For most travellers from North America, Narita remains the primary entry point, but it's worth checking both airports when searching.
Cheapest months to fly to Tokyo
- January to mid-February — consistently the cheapest window of the year. Median round-trips from the US West Coast drop to $469–$593; East Coast fares can be found under $650. Weather is cold but clear, and tourist crowds are minimal.
- June (excluding the first week) — the rainy season (tsuyu) keeps demand down. Fares drop 20–35% compared to May or July.
- September (post-typhoon) — late September sees fares soften as the typhoon season wanes. Autumn foliage begins in late October and draws crowds, but September itself is undervalued.
Most expensive periods
- Late March to early May (Cherry Blossom + Golden Week) — the most expensive travel window of the year. Cherry Blossom season (late March to mid-April) and Golden Week (April 29–May 6) together form a 6-week demand spike. Fares can be 80–120% higher than January levels. Book 4–5 months in advance if you must travel during this period.
- Late December to early January — Western Christmas/New Year coincides with Japanese New Year (Oshōgatsu). Airports and trains are crowded; fares spike sharply.
- Obon (mid-August) — a major Japanese holiday when domestic travel peaks. International inbound fares also rise, though less dramatically than Cherry Blossom season.
Optimal booking window
For flights to Tokyo from North America, the optimal booking window is 3–4 months before departure for off-peak travel, and 5–6 months for Cherry Blossom and Golden Week. Tokyo is a deeply seasonal destination; last-minute deals are extremely rare during peak periods.

Tokyo travel tips for budget flyers
- Fly via Seoul or Taipei. Routing through ICN (Incheon) or TPE (Taipei) on Korean Air, Asiana, or China Airlines can be significantly cheaper than nonstop, especially from East Coast cities.
- Check both NRT and HND. Since Haneda's international terminal expanded, direct routes from North America appear there too — sometimes at lower fares with the added bonus of shorter Tokyo transit.
- Buy a Suica card on arrival. The IC card works on almost all Tokyo trains, buses, and even some convenience store purchases. Buy at the airport.
- Hotel prices are predictable. Unlike airfares, Tokyo hotel rates don't spike as dramatically outside Cherry Blossom season. Book flights first, then hotels.
